That was a very good request my friend issued to me.
She asked me to identify a favorite book and tell what I gleaned from its pages.
One of my treasures is the well worn, discolored pages of a book titled "Gift from the Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. When I hold the aged, petite book in my hand and open its pages, the allusion of time reaches out to me and I feel content. The author paints a vivid word picture, and when I contemplated the book's message, it was as if the soft sound of the rolling sea whispered words of wisdom into my mind. The book is my friend; I have corresponded with it by writing notes and feelings of my inner soul in the margins and open spaces of its construction.
The book was given to me as a gift by a dear friend, Tina Mather,
on Valentine's Day 1979; 36 years ago.
It has been my aspiration to reread and ponder the message
of the small book at the time when we begin a new year
and strive to renew one's objectives.
I have gleaned wisdom from Anne Morrow Lindbergh through her experiences and thoughts while she lived at the beach and wrote the book with great purpose for me the reader.
The following chapters are listed where life ebbs and flows:
From the Beach - Patience
From the Channelled Whelk - Simplicity
From the Moon Shell - SolitudeFrom the Double Sunrise - Relationships
From the Oyster Bed - Marriage
From the Argonauta - Cycles
From A Few Shells - Choices
The Beach at My Back - Joy Now - Peace Here
"Gift from the Sea" has reinforced standards
to live by and "warm fuzzes" to guide me on my journey of life.
Read it! It is good for the nucleus of ones existence.
Just a note:
I have filled a glass container with sea shells to remind
me of the book "Gift from the Sea" and lessons learned.
At one point in my designing years, I chose
colors from a conch shell to use in our parlor.
Dear Reader, until another time when a "this or that" comes to my mind, I wish you well.
